Why Exercise?
Why Exercise is Important
Exercise is important for everyone, no matter who you are. It helps to keep your body healthy, strong, and working well. It also improves how you feel inside, helping to lift your mood and reduce stress. Regular exercise can lower the risk of illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.
For people with learning disabilities (LD), exercise is just as important. It can help improve coordination, balance, and strength, while also giving a great sense of achievement. Exercise can be fun, especially when done with friends or in groups like the ones at Brent Mencap.
Benefits of Exercising
1. Improves Mental Health: Exercise helps release chemicals in the brain that make you feel happier and more relaxed.
2. Boosts Physical Health: It strengthens your heart, muscles, and bones, keeping your body fit and reducing the risk of illnesses.
3. Increases Confidence: When you exercise, you feel good about what you can achieve. It helps boost confidence and self-esteem.
4. Builds Social Connections: Group exercise activities, like yoga or gardening, are a great way to meet new people and build friendships.
5. Enhances Daily Life Skills: Regular movement and activity can help improve focus, coordination, and independence in daily tasks.
Exercise Statistics in the UK
In the UK, research shows that about 66% of adults are not active enough to benefit their health. This includes people from all walks of life, with many facing barriers to regular exercise.
For people with learning disabilities, only 14% meet the recommended weekly amount of exercise. This means most people with LD are not getting enough activity, which can affect both their physical and mental health. However, group exercise and fun activities, like those offered by Brent Mencap, are key to helping improve these statistics.
