Employment Service Introduction

Our Employment service has been working for over 9 years to find work for people with learning disabilities.

Only 10% of people with a learning disability go to work.

There are lots of historical reasons for this, such as low expectations, prejudice, and the "benefits trap".

Brent Mencap believes that more people could and should go to work.

Our employment team can help people with learning disabilities who want to work by providing advice and support before and during a job.

We have excellent relationships with some Brent businesses, and lots of experience in supporting people in different workplaces. Recently 2 people with a learning disability got paid jobs. One with Asda and one with Sainsbury's.

We work with employers to improve their knowledge of the Disability Discrimination Act. Our service is free and confidential.

Brent Mencap's Service to Employers

• We offer free information and guidance on the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. 
• We tell employers how the Act affects them and their employees.
• We advise how to make the recruitment process more accessible.
• We recommend reasonable adjustments to a job to prevent discrimination.
• We advise on the best way to retrain and retain employees.
• We sign-post employers to organisations that can help to recruit and support disabled employees.
• We provide advice on how to get money to change premises or buy equipment.
