Our Aims

Brent Mencap will work in partnership with children and adults with a learning disability, carers, relatives and community based service providers to develop new services and initiatives, continuously improve existing ones and evaluate the results.

We will campaign for equal rights, better opportunities and we will challenge attitudes and prejudice.

We will work to ensure that the views of children and adults with a learning disability remain at the heart of our work and at the heart of the work of others.

We will do this by remaining financially strong, and by recruiting, retaining and developing excellent staff and strong leadership.

Our Objectives

To develop and deliver a range of services which complement and/or supplement those provided by statutory and other support agencies, and to work towards ensuring that current statutory and non-statutory services respond to legislative changes and evidence based on good practice.

To participate in a range of local partnerships to share information, good practice and resources to enable the development of responsive services which change over time as children's and adult's needs and wishes change.

To provide a range of accessible and relevant information and advice about a wide range of issues important to children and adults with learning disabilities and their carers.

To support people with learning disabilities to be at the centre of planning and help ensure that family members and friends are partners in planning, and to involve as many agencies and individuals as is necessary to improve the lives of children and adults with learning disabilities.

Our Values

We believe that everyone is entitled to an active and fulfilling existence, full human and civil rights and to feel valued as a member of the community.

We seek to reduce the disadvantage and discrimination experienced by children and adults with a learning disability.

We support user empowerment and the development of services that are responsive to user needs and wishes.

We recognise that family and friends of children and adults with learning disabilities may experience disadvantage and discrimination as a result of their caring responsibilities. We seek to support them in their role and not disadvantage them further by our work.
